Colin
    I am having quite the opposite experience with ATT. I live in Cleveland Ohio and long delayed buying an Iphone due to horror stories. I had a Samsung state of the art smartphone on Verizon and that didn't work very well either. When I finally bought an Iphone i was pleasantly surprised to find that for me, it worked better in most locations than Verizon, and the MAP that was advertised didn't effect me at all. Now i have the 4S which gets much better reception that the 3gs did, so i am completely happy. I do notice that (I travel a lot) in parts of San Francisco and especially in Manhattan that it doesn't always work so well. EVERYBODY in Manhattan has an Iphone and even though you get 5 bars they sometimes just don't work. So as they say :actual results may vary"..

@Tshai:disqus,
It's easy...supporting all of the various phones is a nightmare. Especially when with every firmware upgrade the manufacturer pushes one new feature is enhanced, while another one no longer works. Customers and channel partners don't blame the phone...they blame the system.

Also Digium major corporate backer, Adtran, is what I referred to an integrated solutions company. If you look at any of the their offerings, they are always soup to nuts; from the router, to switch, to phone system to the phones they sell, all Adtran. It's no surprise Digium is following suit.

Plus desktop phones aren't dying. In fact they're more popular this year than last. At least that's what all the handset manufacturers sales data says :)

I no longer think desk phones are a dying breed, I think they are here to stay. They are selling well. I do think they are in dire need of a major face lift in functionality. Mark's point above about the Javascript on the phone could indeed be part of that face lift. I think a bigger change is over due. I want USB plugs for headsets (buying a headset is a major pain in the arse and easy on a computer). I think there is tremendous potential for an always on IP device that can run apps. This first generation is probably a stepping stone.

The interesting thing for me about these phones is that the phone runs javascript internally, rather than http posting back to the server. I believe this is the first line of desk phones to do this.

The need for focusing on managing timely and prioritized "notifications" is going to be increasingly important for Mobile UC devices. End users will then be less "offline" than when at a desktop.

Good observations1 Having a choice of interfaces for either input or output is going to be key for mobility. That's why unified communications needs such flexibility when communicating with people or automated applications.

Dave,

An interesting analysis. What I am missing in it is the answer to the question why now and what do they gain from this move.
I remember you stating a year or two ago that desktop phones are a dying breed - smartphones and soft clients replacing them. How does that work into the story here? Wouldn't it make more sense for them to focus their efforts on enhancing, marketing and pushing their mobile software clients instead?

IBM makes no sense to me anymore. Like an ADD sufferer, they can't seem to maintain any one marketing focus, product name, or product direction for long anymore. So I would think they would get lost in the fog. Yet their stock price is through the roof and they seem to be selling billions somewhere to someone.
